May 6, 2008 -- MRV Communications has introduced the free-space optics (FSO)-based TereScope TS-10GE system, billed as the industry's first wireless 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10-GbE) transmission platform.
According to the company, the line-of-sight TereScope system is designed to provide enterprises and service providers with a cost-effective and high-bandwidth wireless option for extending backbone networks between multiple buildings without a need for rights-of-way or a fiber-optic cable plant. The patented FSO system supports a range of up to 850 m in clear weather, and connects to the LAN using an XFP interface for physical-layer and wavelength flexibility over distances up to 10 km.
The TereScope family of FSO products provides high-speed wireless connectivity for a variety of last-mile applications. The TS-10GE system uses MRV's patented passive air link (PAL) technology to improve optical coupling with the small area 10 GE detectors. The TereScope TS-10GE can also be connected to an MRV 100-Mbit/sec RF system for back up in the event of heavy fog.
"The TereScope TS-10GE fills a void for enterprises moving to 10-GbE backbones, because it gives them the ability to cost-effectively extend their networks between buildings without dropping down to a lower-speed solution," says Noam Lotan, president and CEO of MRV Communications. "The TereScope TS-10GE also complements MRV's OptiSwitch 930 10-Gigabit Ethernet demarcation device, allowing us to give carriers a full complement of access products at 10-Gigabit speeds."
The 10GE TereScope TS-10GE system will be available in the second half of 2008 with a list price of $45,000.
