SYRACUSE, N.Y. --CABLExpress has upgraded its Skinny-Trunk 12 fiber optic MTP (Multifiber Termination Push-on) connector with a high-precision thermoplastic ferrule designed to lower insertion loss by up to 40%.
Insertion loss is one of the biggest issues facing data systems today, maintains the company; the enhanced Skinny-Trunk connector allows for maximum connections, while it stretches loss budgets and helps “future proof” data centers. The ultra low loss MTP connectors can be used for modular pre-terminated fiber optic cabling systems.
The new MTP connectors combine an improved ferrule design that features more precise fiber alignment with an enhanced polishing technique during the manufacturing process. As a result, the company says the Skinny-Trunks have successfully tested to reduce insertion loss by 40 percent which translates to more allowed connections.
The original CABLExpress Skinny-Trunk product, launched in May 2008, achieved .35 dB loss with six connection points. With the new thermoplastic ferrule design, typical insertion loss on Skinny-Trunk MTP assemblies is reduced from .35 dB to .15 dB and connection points may be increased to up to 24.
With the improved ferrule design and enhanced proprietary polishing process, customers will be able to maintain proper interconnect points to stay within TIA-942 standards and migrate to higher speeds without replacing cable assembly. “CABLExpress Skinny-Trunks allow customers to increase interconnectivity while maintaining their loss budgets,” said Peter E. Belyea, Vice President of Data Center and Cabling for CABLExpress. “The trunks also help ‘future proof’ data centers by creating headroom in loss budgets and creating flexibility for future use.”
The rugged construction of the high-performance furcation point also minimizes dB loss, due to fiber stress, yet it is 75 percent smaller than standard furcation points. At one-third the diameter and one-fifth the weight of industry standard trunking products, the company says the Skinny-Trunk connectors feature improved flexibility and enhanced bend radius. Cable routing is also made easier by the inclusion of LC Uniboot connectors, which are 50 percent smaller in size without compromising performance loss. In addition, an option pulling eye device is available to help pull the cable through a duct or small space.
Skinny-Trunk assemblies are factory terminated and tested, and are customizable with numerous lengths and connector types to choose from, including even or staggered breakouts for the ideal fit into equipment. The plug-and-play technology significantly reduces installation time and cost. The MTP connection consolidates up to 144 fibers into a single connection and is fully compatible with CABLExpress H-Series enclosures. The CABLExpress Skinny-Trunks are sold by CXtec and TERACAI.
