Xirrus announced the deployment of its 802.11n Wi-Fi Arrays across the Asheville Regional Airport facilities, located in Asheville, NC.

The airport services over 37,000 passengers each month by six major airline carriers. The 163-acre complex consists of a terminal area, with air carrier facilities occupying 50 acres, rental car facilities, maintenance facilities, two fixed based operators and a department of public safety.

Airport representatives say that upgrading to the Xirrus Wi-Fi Arrays offered the capability to handle the coverage and density requirements demanded by the constant influx of passengers, as well as effectively supporting the needs of the facilities' daily operations.

"Our initial plan to expand our wireless coverage was going to require upwards of 30 traditional APs. That's when we took a look at Xirrus and found we only required 10 Xirrus Arrays -- we bought less and got more bang for our buck," said Royce Holden, IT Director for the Asheville Regional Airport Authority. "We needed a solution that wasn't going to tax us with additional costs for Ethernet cables and switches."

Royce continued, "With the Integrated Array architecture, you don't have to deal with additional controllers or adding additional switches -- it's pretty much a plug-and-play wireless infrastructure. The design of the Xirrus Array effortlessly covers wide-open areas with high ceilings and is capable of handling the density required when you have a lot of people in one area."
