MPO connector option streamlines MDU horizontal cabling installation

3M has introduced its One Pass Fiber Pathway with MPO Connector.

3M Communication Markets Division has introduced the 3M One Pass Fiber Pathway with a multi-fiber push-on (MPO) connector. Designed to streamline cabling installation in multiple dwelling units (MDUs), the multi-fiber pre-terminated option allows six or 12 fibers to be connected in a single step. 3M says the option eliminates the need for numerous, large fiber distribution terminals (FDTs) on every floor, as well as discrete adapters and ribbon-to-SC connector fan-outs. Compared to other horizontal cabling methods, the company contends that the new pre-terminated connectorization option for its One Pass product can reduce costs over the 35% savings per floor already realized when using the standard One Pass platform.

3M says that advances in MPO connectors, including significant improvements in performance and durability, led the company to further evolve its fiber pathway product to incorporate an MPO connectorization strategy. Instead of terminating the One Pass duct at a large FDT designed to house 12, 24 or more discrete connections, the One Pass with MPO duct is terminated in a much smaller and less expensive wall box containing a single MPO adapter in the stairwell or access space at the end of each hallway. Riser-rated MPO to MPO jumpers are used to connect the 3M One Pass Fiber Pathway with MPO Connector to the Fiber Distribution Hub (FDH) in the building basement or ground floor.

The 3M One Pass Fiber Pathway with MPO Connector is billed as a natural migration in the company’s FTTH to MDU solution set. The 3M One Pass Fiber Pathway, introduced in 2009, is a flexible, surface-mount, adhesive-backed indoor drop cable and cable pathway system that is installed simultaneously in just one pass around the perimeter of an MDU hallway. A proprietary adhesive bonds the product to virtually any wall surface, including painted concrete. The duct itself is also paintable, allowing it to blend into just about any décor.
