Japanese ISP picks Mellanox Infiniband connectivity for public cloud infrastructure

Oct. 31, 2012
Sakura Internet has selected Mellanox's InfiniBand interconnects to enable cloud server and storage connectivity.

Mellanox Technologies (NASDAQ: MLNX), a supplier of interconnect technology for data center servers and storage systems, announced that one of Japan's top Internet providers, Sakura Internet, has selected Mellanox InfiniBand technology to outfit the ISP's public cloud hosting infrastructure.

Sakura Internet says it utilizes the Mellanox InfiniBand platform as the single interconnect for both computing and storage, instead of 10-Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel. The ISP claims to have reduced capital and operational costs thanks to InfiniBand's cost/performance benefits. In addition, InfiniBand has enabled Sakura Internet to increase its cloud hosting scalability and handle the increased number of services they offer to users.

“In order to host the increasing number of customers in our cloud infrastructure, including social gamers, developers, and consumers’ streaming media, we needed to obtain a solution that will help us to process very high incoming data traffic,” comments Ken Washikita, general manager of Sakura Internet's research center.

“With the ever-increasing amounts of rich data in the cloud, service providers must have a scalable interconnect solution to provide the necessary throughput and communication among servers and storage,” adds Marc Sultzbaugh, vice president of worldwide sales at Mellanox Technologies. “Leveraging Mellanox’s interconnect solutions, Sakura Internet is able to provide its customers with a reliable, scalable and flexible cloud services architecture.”
