Panduit has announced the availability of its new energy efficient data center cabinet system, which features the company's latest advancements in air sealing, ducting and containment technology. The new sealed cabinet system eliminates bypass air and the mixing of cold air and exhaust air within the cabinet and the data center, optimizing cooling capacity and reducing cooling energy consumption by over 40%, claims Panduit.
As the need for energy efficiency in the data center increases, so does the demand for new cabinet designs that can support multiple cooling architectures, including hot aisle/cold aisle, cold aisle containment, and vertical exhaust.
“Complete separation of cold air and hot air is the best way to improve cooling energy utilization and reduce energy consumption,” notes Dennis Renaud, Panduit's vice president of datacomm products. “Gaps in the cabinet and poor airflow direction allow cool air to bypass equipment and mix with exhaust air, reducing cooling capacity and efficiency.”

The new, sealed cabinet system can be deployed into raised or slab floor environments and can be integrated with any cooling method to provide data center design flexibility. A range of sizes, depths and colors provide a solution for diverse applications. According to Panduit, designed to "seal, direct, contain and monitor for optimum cooling energy efficiency", the new line of data center cabinets is comprised of the following products:
-- The Net-Access N-Type and S-Type Cabinet Systems incorporate “Total Air Seal” features that ensure a complete seal, closing all gaps and empty rack spaces.
-- The Net-Access In-Cabinet Ducting channels cold aisle air directly into intake fans, preventing recirculation and reducing inlet air temperatures to enable reduced fan speeds.
-- The Net-Contain Vertical Exhaust Duct and Cold Aisle Containment Systems eliminate hot air recirculation and mixing, which allows room and chilled water temperature set points to be raised for greater cooling energy efficiency.
To ensure that thermal efficiency is maintained over time, the Panduit Physical Infrastructure Management (PIM) software solution provides active monitoring and management of the power and cooling environment. By instrumenting the cabinet system with environmental sensors, metered power outlet units and intelligent patch panels, future growth and changes can be accommodated and optimized for thermal, power, space and connectivity.
