ONVIF, the global standardization initiative for IP-based physical security products, will host a panel discussion and networking event on Thursday, April 11 at ISC West 2013. The event is open to the public and will provide a forum for open dialogue about the implementation of interoperability standards for IP-based physical security technology.
Standardization efforts in the security industry continue to move ahead since their introduction five years ago. Per Björkdahl, the Chairman of ONVIF’s Steering Committee, will join security industry experts on a panel to explore the current market impact of ONVIF’s standards initiative, examine possible influences and impacts of standards and look forward to the future of IP interoperability standards deployment in the security industry.
Björkdahl will be joined on the panel by Steve Surfaro, security industry liaison at Axis Communications and representative for the Security Industry Association (SIA); Jeff Slotnick, CPP, PSP, president of security consulting firm Setracon, Inc. and vice chair of the ASIS International Physical Security Council; and Matt Powers, Technical Director, Security Solutions for Anixter and a member of the ONVIF Technical Services Committee. The session will be moderated by Scott Goldfine, editor-in-chief of Security Sales & Integration Magazine, which covers the security market from the perspective of the dealer and integrator communities.

“ONVIF’s rate of adoption over the past five years has been dramatic and we recognize the importance for opportunities for open dialogue with the industry,” Björkdahl said. “Accommodating the needs of the market is very critical to the success of this type of global, industry-wide initiative.”
The panel discussion will also kick off a broader networking event at ISC West, including a proof of concept demonstration of the new ONVIF Profile G for recording and storage functionalities. An interoperability demonstration of Profile S at work in video and audio streaming, PTZ and relay output control as well as video encoder configuration and multicast will also be a focus of the event.
ONVIF introduced the profile concept last year to enable end users to more easily identify features supported by a profile without determining the compatibility between versions of the ONVIF specification. Profile C, the third planned profile which encompasses access control and video integration, will be released early next year.
A presentation of major milestones in ONVIF’s history will also be on display. The exhibit chronicles the growth from a small group of security manufacturers to an industry consortium representing more than 430 member companies and approximately 2,700 products that conform to its interoperability specification. Specific milestones on display will include the group’s formation in October 2008, the release of Version 2.0 of the ONVIF Core Specification in late 2010, and the release of Profile S last year.
The panel discussion will be held from 4 – 5:30 p.m., Thursday April 11 in Venetian Ballroom J of the Venetian/Palazzo Congress Center & Sands Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, with the interoperability demonstrations and networking event immediately following the discussion.
