Web seminar addresses cabling’s role in achieving efficiency

Oct. 21, 2013
Even though LEED gives cabling the cold shoulder, system designers, installers and users can still achieve energy and other efficiencies through media and management choices.

A web seminar hosted by Cabling Installation & Maintenance on Thursday, October 24 will discuss the ways in which a structured cabling system can be energy-, labor- and performance-efficient. Titled “Are ‘green’ efforts and cabling a mismatch?’” the seminar will include three presentations, each of which takes a unique perspective on how cabling choices affect efficiency.

In a summary of the seminar, Cabling Installation & Maintenance says, “With cabling technologies and options all but ignored by the USGBC’s LEED program, is the concept of a ‘green’ structured cabling system an oxymoron? Technological, business and standards developments from all corners of the cabling industry indicate the concept is not an oxymoron. Cabling-system stakeholders have the opportunity to make choices that can greatly enhance a network and cabling system’s efficiencies. This webcast seminar … addresses several such options, outlining the efficiencies gained by each and emphasizing each option’s environment impact compared to other options.”

The three presentations will be as follows.

  • Cooling a Data Center Efficiently—presented by Ian Seaton, global technology manager with Chatsworth Products Inc.
  • Efficiencies of a Fiber-Optic Infrastructure—presented by Robert Yarbrough, market development manager for datacom with HellermannTyton
  • Efficiencies of Field-Assembled Optical Fiber Cables—delivered by Kurt Templeman, director of enterprise networks with Sumitomo Electric Lightwave

The seminar, expected to take approximately one hour, will be broadcast live at 1pm EDT/10am PDT on Thursday, October 24. Beginning the following day, it will be available for on-demand viewing for a six-month period. Individuals who attend the seminar in its entirety will be eligible to receive one ITS continuing education credit (CEC) from BICSI.
