Paper explains how to reduce bandwidth consumption of HD surveillance

Nov. 27, 2013
Document from Avigilon says as long as you have the right tools in place, HD surveillance need not be a bandwidth hog.

A white paper from Avigilon titled “Four Ways HD Surveillance Users Can Reduce Bandwidth” emphasizes that modern surveillance systems have the adaptability to avoid consuming excessive bandwidth on a network. The paper says, “The perception of high-definition video surveillance by those new to using it, is that HD surveillance takes up too much bandwidth and storage space and that you will have to pay a lot of money to expand your network and storage capacity in order to accommodate it. While there is some validity in those concerns, the truth is that HD video surveillance does not take up as much bandwidth and storage space as you might expect.”

The paper names and details four steps network operators can take with their HD cameras to reduce a system’s bandwidth consumption. Those steps involve compression-format selection, resolution, frame rate and event-based recording.

“When it comes down to managing a company’s network, IT professionals are like Suze Orman with their bandwidth,” the paper quips. “They are cautious and strategic about how they allocate it … The last thing an IT manager wants is video footage slowing down the entire network and taking up too much storage space.” Avigilon positions this paper as a means of avoiding exactly that.
