7 rules for accurate wireless site surveys

Don't get stuck with totally useless -- but colorful -- heat maps that have no value to your organization.

An evergreen technical white paper and companion podcast/video by Keith Parsons of the site WirelessLAN Professionals (wlanpros.com) presents seven rules for accurate wireless site surveys.

Parsons contends that "the process of gathering appropriate and accurate data during a site survey is as simple as following a few easy rules. Break the rules, however, and you could end up with totally useless -- but colorful -- heat maps that have no value to your organization."

Parsons asserts his seven rules have been "gleaned through hundreds of site surveys and teaching hundreds networking professionals how to use site survey products." Briefly listed, they are as follows:

Rule 1: Calibrate your drawing properly
Rule 2: Set the Channel Scan to the correct frequencies
Rule 3: Set your Guess Range properly
Rule 4: Set appropriate ‘Snap Rate’ for your situation
Rule 5: Capture on both sides of what you care about
Rule 6: Click accurately
Rule 7: Always, always do A passive survey
