The 2012 Atlantic hurricane season was the third most active season on record, tied with 1887, 1995, 2010, and 2011. The deadliest and most destructive storm of the season was Hurricane Sandy, which is currently the second costliest hurricane in United States history, after Katrina in 2005. In the United States, Hurricane Sandy affected 24 states, including the entire eastern seaboard from Florida to Maine and west across the Appalachian Mountains to Michigan and Wisconsin, with particularly severe damage in New Jersey and New York. Its storm surge hit New York City on October 29, flooding streets, tunnels and subway lines and cutting power in and around the city. Damage in the U.S. from the storm is estimated at over $71 billion (2012 USD).
