OFS counts 1M+ InvisiLight FTTH installs, launches pre-terminated FTTx MDU line in UK

Sept. 26, 2022
OFS announced the introduction of its pre-terminated unbalanced technology solution, MDU!Grow, billed as a platform designed to promote fast network growth, while complying with new building installation demands in the UK market.

At the recent Connected Britain 2022 (Sep. 20-21) expo in London, OFS officially touted its deployment of over one million global indoor and outdoor FTTx installations via its InvisiLight Optical Solution platform.

The full OFS InvisiLight cabling portfolio is based on the company's EZ-Bend (G.657.B3) fiber with a 2.5mm bend radius.

Billed as being "virtually invisible to the eye," the manufacturer noted that the InvisiLight platform has "evolved into a complete plug-and-play system to deploy fiber in buildings to and within living units or offices, delivering aesthetically pleasing broadband connectivity for building owners and tenants."

MDU!Grow streamlines FTTx MDU network deployments

Also at the company's showcase at Connected Britain in the event's Business Design Centre, OFS announced the introduction of its pre-terminated unbalanced technology solution, MDU!Grow, billed as a platform designed to promote fast network growth, while complying with new building installation demands in the UK market.

As contended by OFS's UK announcement:

The MDU!Grow Solution allows second operators in-building to minimise their buildout cost and time of FTTx MDU networks, with innovative riser solutions to bring users online, by offering compact plug-and-play products for deployment in existing multiple dwelling unit (MDU) buildouts.

Splitters deployed on current networks are usually balanced, dividing the incoming optical signal equally between its outputs, and are usually distributed into two or three levels, but it does not have to be this way.

Splitters can be unbalanced, which means that the power division can be optimised to reach the user with only what is required to establish a connection.

Taking advantage of power unbalancing on pre-terminated products allows internet service providers (ISPs) to design a more power-efficient network, which results in more splitting levels while using only a single fiber pre-terminated cable to interconnect the splitters as a distribution network.

The manufacturer further noted that that this change in topology enables second operators to re-evaluate their expansion areas, timelines, and user ingress. The company emphasized that the unbalanced topology also allows ISPs "to get the most out of their networks, reaching new areas faster while still maintaining the network quality and providing users with high-speed connectivity."

Nicolas J. Mulder, application engineer for Furukawa Solutions, commented,

“Innovation is not only about breakthroughs, but also about taking what exists and using it in a more efficient way. The MDU!Grow will allow the second in building operator a cost-effective, easy to install, and minimally invasive way to connect their MDU customers.”

Headquartered in Norcross, Georgia with facilities in several countries worldwide, OFS is a a top global designer, manufacturer, and provider of optical fiber, fiber-optic cable, connectivity, fiber-to-the-subscriber (FTTx) technology and specialty fiber-optic products, and part of the multi-billion-dollar global optical communications supplier Furukawa Electric Group.
