Two-day training covers fiber-optic OSP design, installation, troubleshooting

Mississauga Training Consultants' course is 70-percent hands-on and earns successful particpants the FOA's CFOS/O designation.

A two-day course covering fiber-optic technologies used in outside-plant (OSP) networks is being offered at the Mississauga Training Consultants newly renovated facility on November 5 and 6. The training is a specialist add-on course to the Fiber Optic Association's Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) designation. Successful participants earn the CFOS/O designation.

“This two-day program will introduce the student to standards governing the installation, testing and troubleshooting of OSP fiber-optic cable systems,” organizers said. “Our students learn various types of cable and enclosures for OSP applications. Students learn how to troubleshoot and test using an OTDR, VFL and loss test set.”

The course is more than 70-percent hands-on, Mississauga Training Consultants explained, and it concludes with a written and practical examination.

Topics covered in classroom-lecture format include a basic introduction to OSP cabling, information on closures, fiber-optic safety, and fiber-plant documentation. Topics addressed in the hands-on environment include OSP cable preparation and cleaning, installation of fanout kits, mechanical and fusion splicing, mid-span access, OTDR/OLTS/VFL procedures, and an OSP cabling project completion.

The training area is part of an 1,800-square-foot facility that was renovated in February 2012. It is located at 1125 Derry Road East in Mississauga, Ontario Canada.
