VIAVI Announces Fiber Optic Cable and Fiber Infrastructure Sensing Solutions

July 18, 2024
VIAVI’s latest solution, NITRO Fiber Sensing, provides real-time monitoring of infrastructure to prevent downtime and expensive repairs.

VIAVI Solutions Inc. introduced NITRO® Fiber Sensing, a real-time asset monitoring and analytics solution for critical infrastructure. The solution applies to many environments, from oil to border/perimeter security, data center interconnects, and more.

Operators are challenged when protecting and optimizing their critical infrastructure, with the damage to essential assets typically costing more than the initial investment. Through localization, quick detection, and prevention of external threats, these damages and outages can be reduced, lowering the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

NITRO Fiber Sensing consists of Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS), Simultaneous Temperature and Strain Sensing (DTSS) and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technologies, all of which make it so it can provide the intelligence needed to hastily identify and pinpoint threats.

NITRO Fiber Sensing utilizes remote Fiber Test Heads (FTH), also known as interrogators, to monitor fiber-enabled infrastructure or fiber optic cables. Through real-time distributed fiber optic sensing FTH measures temperature and strain along a fiber or can detect acoustic vibrations near a fiber. FTH, when deployed at strategic locations, such as power cables and pipelines can provide critical infrastructure data that can prevent downtime. “Alerts notify operators of potential threats from human interference, vehicle movement, digging operations, fishing nets or ship anchors encroaching on valuable assets. These alarms include precise location information to assist maintenance, response or repair teams.”

“As a leader in fiber monitoring, VIAVI is trusted to monitor millions of miles of fiber with thousands of test heads around the world today. We take fiber monitoring to the next level with the NITRO Fiber Sensing solution,” said Kevin Oliver, Vice President and General Manager, Fiber and Access Solutions, VIAVI. “As the use of fiber optic cables increases across various industries to enable accurate, resilient monitoring while complying with security regulations, our broad portfolio serves each customer’s unique needs.”
