Lumos lays down 655-mi. fiber broadband expansion in coastal N.C.

April 19, 2023
North Carolina service expansion will furnish portions of Wilmington and Carolina Beach, as well as the communities of Ogden, Myrtle Grove, Castle Hayne, and Wrightsboro, with $56 million worth of advanced fiber-optic network cabling and connectivity.

Lumos has this month announced a $56 million investment to provide its fully fiber-optic internet and home Wi-Fi services to residents and businesses of North Carolina's New Hanover County and the City of Wilmington.

Through the expansion, Lumos will provide portions of Wilmington and Carolina Beach, as well as the communities of Ogden, Myrtle Grove, Castle Hayne, and Wrightsboro, with 655 miles of advanced fiber-optic connectivity technology.

Engineering work on the new fiber build will start in mid-2023.

The network expansion highlights the company’s rapid growth and development plans as the third new market for Lumos in 2023. The ISP contends the network expansion will bring the community a network capable of delivering up to 385 times faster upload speeds, and up to 30 times faster download speeds than traditional cable.

Lumos notes the new fiber internet service will enable smooth operations of the communities' current and future technology needs, along with delivering innovations in telemedicine, remote working and learning, video streaming, and entertainment which demand the speed and reliability of fiber-optic connectivity.

The expansion on North Carolina’s coast is the third new market initiative for Lumos so far this year. The fiber broadband provider previously announced plans to enter parts of Spartanburg County, North Carolina, as well as South Carolina.

Lumos Networks and North Carolina's NorthState combined under Lumos brand last year, and named a new CEO. NorthState had served North Carolina and Lumos Networks, Virginia. Both companies are owned by EQT, which had operated the two brands as a single company.
