Integrated fiber-optic VoIP routers simplify network architecture

March 19, 2013
By eliminating external modems, Patton’s new fiber-optic VoIP IADs may reduce equipment costs, simplify network architecture and expedite service deployment.

Patton Electronics has made available for general release its two new SmartNode VoIP Integrated Access Devices (IAD). For carrier-providers and small-to-medium enterprises, the Patton VoIP IADs combine integrated fiber-optic WAN-access with VoIP gateway and VoIP router functionality in a single device, both offering a small form-factor pluggable (SFP) slot for fiber-optic WAN uplink.

"Global deployment of fiber-to-the-building (FTTB) is growing rapidly in carrier networks," comments Tyler Delin, SmartNode product marketing manager for Patton. "Customers asked for fiber uplinks, and we responded. The SFP fiber-WAN interface for SmartNode PRI-class and BRI-class IADs is tested, fully released, and generally available."

The SFP fiber-optic interface is integral to Patton's SmartNode 4670 BRI/FXS/FXO VoIP IAD that supports 8 to 16 calls, and its SmartNode 4990 PRI/T1/E1 VoIP IAD that supports 15 to 120 calls. Both are suitable for connecting traditional enterprise PBX telephony systems with ITSPs and SIP trunking services.

Patton's Delin continues, "Customers can use these new SmartNodes as complete one-box solutions. You can IP-enable any existing PBX system with high-speed fiber-optic WAN access. SmartNode IADs also provide advanced IP routing."

Patton cites itself as among the industry’s first manufacturers of VoIP customer premise equipment to offer carrier-grade VoIP IADs with a built-in fiber-optic interface. By eliminating the need for an outboard fiber-optic modem, the company says the integrated interface lowers equipment costs, simplifies network architecture and expedites service deployment when IP-enabling legacy PBX phone systems.
