LC fiber-optic connector for harsh environments

Souriau’s UTS LC fiber-optic connector achieves IP68/IP69K ratings while the connector shell protects the fibers from damage.

Souriau recently added LC fiber-optic connectors to its UTS product line, in a move the company says expands the range to a point at which it “now covers the entire spectrum of power and signal needs in copper and fiber-optic technologies, all with standard accessories and the same level of ergonomics,” the company said when announcing the new fiber-optic connector.

The UTS LC features a built-in sealing system, the company added, “for dynamic IP68/IP69K waterproof connections. The UTS LC features the particularly ergonomic closing mechanism that is a characteristic of the UTS range—a one-third-turn bayonet lock that produces an audible and tactile click to confirm proper connection. It is guaranteed for 250 matings and unmatings.” The connector withstands 500 hours of salt spray, is UV-resistant, and is not susceptible to mechanical damage or significant color changes after five years of outdoor exposure, the company said.

Additionally, the connector’s design protects the fibers from damage, as Souriau explained: “Whereas LC optical contacts on competing solutions protrude past the connectors, leaving the fibers vulnerable to breakage during installation … Souriau has developed a special design that eliminates all risk of breakage. The fiber-optic terminations are protected by the connector shell.”

Terminating the connector requires standard tools and knowledge/training of fiber-optic connector termination procedures, the company stated.
