Tyco Electronics receptacle doubles standard RJ-45 Ethernet port density

Feb. 8, 2010
From Tyco Electronics, the RJ Point Five connector system doubles the port density of a standard RJ-45 Ethernet link while maintaining field termination capability.

From Tyco Electronics, the RJ point five connector system offers double the port density of a standard RJ-45 Ethernet link while maintaining field termination capability. The product supports Gigabit speeds of Cat 5E UTP cable with upcoming support for PoE+ and 10GBASE-T over Cat 6a cabling. With port spacing on a 7 mm centerline, the unit occupies about half the space of a RJ 45 Ethernet link, utilizing the same footprint to support both integrated magnetic and non-integrated systems. The receptacle's modular configuration allows for rapid deployment of product extensions.

Along with the high density receptacle, Tyco Electronics provides a companion mating cable assembly. The legacy 3/6 contact pairing in RJ-45 applications has been replaced with a quadrant style design to minimize noise and maximize return loss performance. Additionally, a latching feature supports a lanyard that will facilitate up to 96 ports on a single line card. The cable assemblies are capable of field termination. Cable management solutions for single box and rack configurations are also available.

Specific applications for the products include: high density Ethernet switching/routing products, data center switching (top-of-rack, end-of-row, and mid-row), server I/O, and wiring closet switching products.

TYCO ELECTRONICS UNLEASHES THE RJ POINT FIVE CONNECTOR FOR DOUBLE THE PORT DENSITY OF THE RJ 45 ETHERNET LINK

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Jan. 28, 2010 -- Tyco Electronics unleashes a new next-generation Ethernet link -- the RJ point five connector system -- designed to offer double the port density of the standard RJ 45 Ethernet link while maintaining field termination capability. The product supports Gigabit speeds of Cat5E UTP cable, in integrated and non-integrated magnetic solutions, with a roadmap to support PoE+ and 10GBASE-T over Cat 6a cable.

“The RJ point five connector is a direct response to the market’s need for a cost-effective solution for higher I/O port density,” says Gretchen L. Troutman, product manager. “The system provides OEMs with a lower cost per port while retaining the convenience of a single connector per channel. The modular design achieves greater flexibility to accommodate specific application requirements.”

With port spacing on a 7mm centerline, the RJ point five connector occupies about half the space of a RJ 45 Ethernet link -- utilizing the same footprint to support both integrated magnetic and non-integrated solutions. The modular configuration of the receptacle allows for easy and rapid deployment of product extensions.

Along with the high density receptacle, Tyco Electronics provides the mating cable assembly designed to provide superior electrical performance. The legacy 3/6 contact pairing in RJ 45 applications has been replaced with a quadrant style design to minimize noise and maximize return loss performance. Additionally, the latching feature supports an easy-to-use lanyard that will facilitate up to 96 ports on a single line card. The cable assemblies are capable of field termination. Cable management solutions for single box and rack configurations are also available.

Specific applications include: high density Ethernet switching/routing products, data center switching (top-of-rack, end-of-row, and mid-row), server I/O, and wiring closet switching products.
