Leviton Network Solutions Achieves Carbon Neutrality

July 12, 2024
Two years ahead of schedule, the organization achieved the goal at all six of its factory locations.

In its most recent Sustainability Report, Leviton announced that its Network Solutions business achieved carbon neutrality in 2023, two years ahead of its 2025 goal. All six of Leviton Network Solutions’ factories—in Seattle, WA; Fuquay-Varina, NC; Bloomingdale, IL; St. Petersburg, FL; New Holland, PA; and Glenrothes, Scotland—have achieved the carbon-neutral milestone.

“Leviton’s Network Solutions business unit includes all our facilities, warehouses, and sales offices, inclusive of the proportion of Leviton manufacturing facilities shared with other business units,” the company explained.

The New Holland facility, which manufactures four-pair copper cabling products and became part of Leviton when the company acquired Berk-Tek in 2020, transitioned away from fossil fuels and to nuclear-generated power in September 2022.

Leviton Network Solutions’ chief operating officer Ross Goldman also serves as chief sustainability officer for the entire company. He observed, “Leviton has 17 locations that are carbon neutral [and] is now 23% carbon neutral. We are well on track to achieve 100% carbon neutrality by 2030. We are pleased to report that in 2023, our total absolute tCO2e [carbon dioxide equivalent] was reduced by 29% compared to our 2021 baseline year. In addition, we have worked to enable our customers to reduce their emissions footprint by over an average of 2.25 million tCO2e per year over the last two years—primarily through our lighting controls solutions.”

The 2023 Sustainability Report highlights several measures and initiatives the company has taken on its path to total carbon neutrality. Among those initiatives is the Sustainably Smart Packaging Leviton now offers for many of its products. “Our Sustainably Smart packs are an environmentally sound alternative to individually packaged network connectivity products, eliminating single-use plastic packaging on job sites every day,” the company said. Patch cords and 8-position modular jacks are among the products that ship to customers in Sustainably Smart packs. Leviton also uses plastic-free packaging for fiber-optic pigtails.

Other highlights and milestones of Leviton’s sustainability efforts include the following.

  • The number of CN2030 (Carbon Neutral 2030) program carbon-neutral manufacturing sites grew from 9 in 2022 to 17 in 2023.
  • The Lighting Controls business unit reduced its carbon emissions by 17% from the 2021 baseline year, and now has two facilities that are CN2030 program carbon neutral.
  • The Commercial & Industrial business units reduced emissions by 8% from a 2021 baseline.
  • Two Leviton LIVE sites, where professionals can directly experience Leviton solutions in real-time and further their industry and product knowledge, are now both CN2030 program carbon neutral.

“I am very proud of our company’s achievements to date through our CN2030 program,” said Daryoush Larizadeh, Leviton’s president and chief executive officer. “Global greenhouse gas emissions are still on the rise, so as a leader building what’s next to light, power and connect everyday spaces, it is incumbent upon us to take action and minimize emissions as quickly as possible.”

Goldman added, “We made significant progress last year toward our CN2030 goal, especially with our Network Solutions business unit’s carbon neutrality achievement two years ahead of schedule. We have over 20 major facilities where 62% of their energy has now transitioned to a clean source, and all four of our business units contributed significantly to our CO2e emission reductions. We are more excited than ever to keep the momentum going to further drive our progress toward a lower carbon future.”
