Splice Closure Simplifies BEAD Fiber-Installation Projects

Prysmian’s Eagle is a modular, field-configurable closure that can be deployed in aerial, pedestal, and below-grade spaces in every segment of a rural broadband network.

Prysmian has officially launched the Eagle Splice Closure, which the company says simplifies fiber-optic cabling installation for BEAD projects. The closure’s modular system saves money, reduces inventory and waste, and simplifies installation, Prysmian points out.

The Eagle features “a versatile design suitable for a wide range of applications in FTTx/access networks,” the company said when announcing the closure’s availability on November 12. “It is field-configurable for trunk/branch splices up to 288, midspan/express splices up to 288, terminal aggregation and customer drops. Eagle is compatible with aerial, pedestal, and below-grade applications.”

“Existing closures were not previously optimized for BEAD projects due to lower densities and different deployment conditions,” said Jon Fitz, Prysmian North America’s director of advanced business solutions for telecom. “The Eagle Splice Closure addresses the emerging requirements for BEAD-certified closures by providing one simple, modular design that can be used in every segment of a rural broadband network.”

The trays “provide positive fiber management and can be configured for different types of splice protectors and splitters,” the company further stated. “The closure has four circular ports with entry for up to 16 cables, one oval port for one midspan or two separate cables, and a variety of modular compression seals.”

Fitz added, “With just one closure and a-la-carte accessories, the Eagle Splice Closure makes it easier for installers to simply buy and use only what they need. There are fewer part numbers to engineer and stock, resulting in much lower costs, quicker builds, and less waste.”

After its announcement and before its commercial availability, the Eagle Splice Closure was recognized by ISE, our sister website, with a Network Innovators Award in July.
