Universal Electric Corporation (UEC) recently completed a building expansion project that approximately doubled the size of its headquarters in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. The company explained that the construction project involved a significant increase in production space, additional office space, an expanded fitness room and locker-room area, and new meeting room and lab space, including state-of-the-art video conference room, and a calibration room to support additional sales of the Critical Power Monitor product.
“When UEC moved into its new building in 2007, we never anticipated the need to drastically expand the facility just a short time later,” said Chris Myer, project manager of the building expansion. “This project involved a total addition of 82,000 square feet, of which 57,000 went toward new production space. Today our building sits at approximately 171,000 square feet, and I’m confident that we now have adequate space to operate efficiently while also being prepared for future company growth.”
Over the course of the project, UEC was able to incorporate multiple green initiatives while also using its own products throughout the facility. The Universal Electric Corporation headquarters now uses 380V direct current (DC) lighting throughout the entire new production space and offers four electric-vehicle parking stations. Additionally, UEC’s overhead power distribution product, Starline Track Busway (pictured), along with CPM was run throughout the facility to power production equipment, workstations and lighting, and monitor all power being drawn. Starline Plug-In Raceway, UEC’s wall-mounted power distribution system, was also installed in lab and office areas, as well as the fitness room and break rooms.
The company said, “The new Universal Electric Corporation facility is a culmination of two years of detailed research, planning and building to create a sustainable space where employees are happy coming to work every day. As a private, family-owned company, UEC is proud to be experiencing this level of success and grateful for the opportunity to invest in such an impressive headquarters location in the greater Pittsburgh area.”
