The Stargate Project Has $500 Billion Invested by Big Tech in AI Data Center Infrastructure

Feb. 7, 2025
As AI grows, the surge in demand for data centers continues, leading to major investments from big tech companies.

A group of major tech companies plans to invest $500 billion over four years in developing AI data center infrastructure in the U.S. The recently announced Stargate Project is backed by SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX, as well as Arm, Microsoft, and Nvidia. Executives from the companies involved in the partnership outlined the project to United States’ President Donald Trump at the White House.

Larry Ellison, Oracle Chairman and CTO, stated that he project will consist of 10 data centers, including one that is currently under construction in Texas. He also said that this could possibly expand to include up to 20 data center projects.

SoftBank and OpenAI are the primary partners of Stargate, with SoftBank handling the financial responsibility and OpenAI in charge of operations.

“This infrastructure will secure American leadership in AI, create hundreds of thousands of American jobs, and generate massive economic benefit for the entire world,” OpenAI wrote in a press release.

“This project will not only support the re-industrialization of the United States but also provide a strategic capability to protect the national security of America and its allies. We will begin deploying $100 billion immediately.”

Although implementation may be a challenge, the global data center industry is still seeing an increase in demand and this appears to be one way to address it.
