problem

Although the tia/eia-606 administration standard specifies the method by which a network`s termination hardware should be marked, the standard frequently is not followed. In fact, some installed systems that are marked do not comply with the standard because the markings do not meet the established color-code requirements. Furthermore, the problems associated with handwritten labels, such as smudging, illegibility, and inconsistent lettering style, have been well-documented in this and other publications.

solution

Properly creating and using computer-printed cable and termination-hardware identification labels will ensure compliance with the aspects of the tia/eia-606 standard that relate to your particular installation. It can also save you time at the job site.

procedure

1) Select appropriately colored labels, according to the specifications in the tia/eia-606 standard.

2) Before you begin the installation job, format and print the labels you will need using a label-design software program and your office printer. By doing this preliminary work, you will not have to spend time at the job site writing labels.

3) Once on the job, apply each label to the appropriate piece of termination hardware as you make your way through the installation.

4) When labeling cables, make sure the color of the label on the cable matches the color of the label on the termination hardware to which it will be connected. This will simplify reconnection during system maintenance or troubleshooting. You can enhance the installation`s aesthetics by printing the cables` labels using the same method you use for the termination hardware`s labels.

This tip advises you to print the labels before you reach the job site. If you are unable to do so, you can use a portable label-maker at the site. In such a case, be certain that the labels you produce at the site match the standard`s color-code requirements.
