The exolon exothermic welding system from erico Inc. produces permanent, welded bonds without the smoke and other emissions usually associated with the welding process. The company says that a dual filter on top of the exolon mold traps virtually all of the emissions created by the welding process, while allowing heated air to escape. Connections of any size can be made through this process. Pictured are several bonds that have been made using the exothermic welder.
erico says that, unlike mechanical connections, exothermic welds--such as those created by the exolon system--have current-carrying capacity equal to or greater than that of the conductor; will not deteriorate with age; are permanent bonds that cannot loosen, corrode, or increase in resistance; can be visually checked for quality; and require lightweight, inexpensive equipment and no specialized skills to make.
The welder`s battery-operated electric igniter system eliminates the starting material and flint igniters required by conventional exothermic welding systems. Virtually any type of copper-to-copper or copper-to-steel connection can be made with the exolon system.
