The Siemon Company has received an award from the State of Connecticut for its elementary and middle school mentoring program.
The program in Watertown, CT was launched last year. Since then, a number of other local companies have joined in, keeping the program ever growing and providing more opportunities to support additional children. Through the program, Siemon Company employees volunteer time weekly to spend with an assigned child from a local school. They provide support and encouragement, coordinate activities, and represent a positive role model. All volunteers must meet specific requirements and are professionally trained.
The Siemon Company was one of only five companies statewide to recently receive special recognition for its mentoring program. The award was given at a ceremony attended by the state commissioner of education, affiliates from The Governor's Prevention Partnership, The Connecticut Mentoring Group, and hundreds of people from participating companies.
"The impact of this program on our young people is remarkable," says Jeannine Lawton, coordinator for The Siemon Company's Mentoring Program. "The children really benefit from the individual attention of having a caring adult who consistently spends quality time with them. The students show improved grades and improved attitudes toward school, increased resistance to drug use and negative behavior, and increased self esteem. It's really gratifying to see the impact one can make in a young person's life."
