TIA addresses changes to standards regarding VoIP over WLAN/LAN infrastructure

April 23, 2003
April 23, 2003 - Work will be undertaken by TIA's engineering committee.

The Telecommunications Industry Association has initiated a number of projects to create new or revise existing standards to address voice-over-Internet-protocol over wide local area network mobile terminals and WLAN/LAN infrastructure.

This work will be undertaken by TIA's engineering committee TR-41, User Premises Telecommunications Equipment Requirements. It involves both the TR-41.3 and TR-41.4 subcommittees.

TR41.3, Analog and Digital Wireline Terminals subcommittee, will address the electro-acoustic transmission requirements for VoIP over WLAN wireless terminals. The effort will be based on the standard ANSI/TIA/EIA-810-A, Telecommunications -- Telephone Terminal Equipment -- Transmission Requirements for Narrowband Voice over IP and Voice over PCM Digital Wireline Telephones. Although there are some parameters that differ between wireless and wireline digital sets, many are the same. If the differences are few, the project might revert to a revision of ANSI/TIA/EIA-810-A to encompass VoIP over WLAN telephones.

TR-41.4, IP Telephony Infrastructures subcommittee will work on two aspects of the project. The first is a new standard to address the WLAN/LAN infrastructure issues. The second is a revision to the recently published TSB-146, Telecommunications -- IP Telephony Infrastructures -- IP Telephony Support for Emergency Calling Service, to add support for VoIP over WLAN technology.

TR-41.4's working group -- TR-41.4.4, Customer Premises Equipment, VoIP Terminals (Telephones) -- will handle the performance and interoperability requirements for VoIP over WLAN wireless terminals. This effort will be part of existing revision to the standard TIA/EIA/IS-811, Telecommunications -- Telephone Terminal Equipment -- Performance and Interoperability Requirements for Voice-over-IP (VoIP) Feature Telephones.

The work involves liaisons with the Internet Engineering Task Force, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers 802.11 and the Wi-Fi Alliance. The schedule calls for a working draft of the standards and telecommunications systems bulletin by the end of 2003, and publication of the new documents by the end of 2004.

All interested parties are invited to participate in the next TR-41 meeting in Orlando, May 5-9. For more information contact TR-41.4 Chairman Bob Bell at 1- 801-294-3034 or email [email protected].

The TIA is based in Arlington, VA. For more information visit www.tiaonline.org.
