RLE Technologies unveils Wi-Fi temperature and humidity sensor for buildings

The company's WIFI-TH wireless temperature and humidity sensor leverages an existing Wi-Fi network to communicate with a building management system.

RLE Technologies, a provider of web-based monitoring systems and leak detection systems for mission-critical facilities, has introduced the WIFI-TH, a wireless temperature and humidity sensor that leverages an existing Wi-Fi network to communicate with a building management system.

Per the company, the WIFI-TH system is wireless and battery powered. Since wires are not required for power or transmission, an electrician isn’t required for installation. Plus, RLE’s Wi-Fi sensors are compact, unobtrusive, and provide superior battery life – up to seven years at a five minute transmission interval.

“As Wi-Fi technology evolves to become cheaper, more reliable, and more secure, we’ve noticed that many of our customers are using Wi-Fi to power their networks,” comments Ryan Clemens, senior firmware engineer at RLE. “We wanted to provide a sensor with RLE’s quality and reliability that could quickly and easily integrate into these environments.”

The WIFI-TH’s temperature and humidity data can be sent via a UDP packet to a BMS system or pulled into RLE’s WiNG-MGR application. And while IT departments may be hesitant to add wireless devices, it will ease their mind to know that these sensors were designed with security in mind.

RLE notes that the WIFI-TH: only allows one-way communications, so there is no risk it could be hacked remotely; fully supports industry standard WPA/WPA2‑PSK encryption; and features encrypted data storage for network and configuration information.

Jeremy Swanner, RLE’s president, concludes, “Over the past two years, RLE’s wireless sensors have set the benchmark for affordability, battery life, transmission range, and integration. Going into this project we knew the WIFI-TH would have to meet the same criteria, and it absolutely does.”
