    1-Gigabit PON (left) serves residential customers, with each home connection raising costs arising from the fiber-network build. 10G PON (right) is poised to serve not only residential customers, but also business services and future applications like 5G anyhaul. Among the cost-containment advantages of 10G PON is that it operates over different wavelengths of the same fiber that 1G PON uses, thereby obviating the fiber-network build.
